You might be fascinated to see a lock. Canals use locks to deal with changes in elevation. Lock 32 has a modern lock that was built for the New York State Barge Canal. You can see an original lock at Lock 66 (adjacent to Interstate 490 near Winton Rd.). Another original lock is part of a town park Lock 62 and the Erie Canal Trail. Lock 62 is a stop along the Pittsford Railroad Loop Trail, it is slightly less visible, hidden on a trail tucked behind the plazas on both sides of Monroe Ave., connecting across Clover, and continuing along the northeastern side of Monroe Ave. to Highland Ave. Pittsford Trails & Walkways provide over 85 miles of trails and pathways for walkers, hikers, and cyclists to enjoy. Online interactive trails and sidewalks maps are available here. There is also a section of the original Erie Canal running from where the new Southern route begins on the present canal path past Lock 66 and ends near the old Spring House.
